EXHIBITION

ARCHAEOLOGY OF CONSCIOUSNESS VENICE
Until November 24 2024
Presented in the courtyard of Palazzo Giustinian Lolin as if risen from the waters of the surrounding lagoon. The three monumental arches from Vincenzo De Cotiis’ series represent a mediating force between the cultural heritage of La Serenissima and the modern artistic vision of De Cotiis. They symbolize the past, present, and future, each arch demarcating a distinct temporal perspective. Collectively, they form a passage through time that visitors experience by moving through and under the installation.

The arches incorporate ancient stones and marble, representing natural forces beyond human creation. Murano glass specifically locates them within a Venetian context, and fibreglass references the futuristic ambitions of the artist. This spectrum of materials creates portals to metaphysical realms, allowing time to be experienced in any direction.

De Cotiis describes ARCHAEOLOGY OF CONSCIOUSNESS VENICE as a summation of deep introspection, manifesting as transitions through time and layers of subconscious. Each arch articulates a four-dimensional concept through spatial and material means, reflecting memories of the past and visions for the future. The arches stand as portals to philosophical understanding and spiritual enlightenment.

The arches celebrate Venice’s architectural history, visible from the Grand Canal, they dialogue with the ancient city's architectural features and critique the idealized form of the arch.

MISSION

VINCENZO DE COTIIS FOUNDATION is proud to announce its inauguration in Venice.

The new foundation has been conceived from the entity previously known as DE COTIIS VENICE, and will now permanently reside at Palazzo Giustinian Lolin on the banks of the Grand Canal.

VINCENZO DE COTIIS FOUNDATION will enrich the Venetian art scene with a programme of exhibitions, public art installations and publications dedicated to advancing the understanding and appreciation of contemporary art and design. In alignment with La Biennale di Venezia, the foundation will open on April 19 2024 with the installation ARCHAEOLOGY OF CONSCIOUSNESS VENICE.

HISTORY

The 15th century Palazzo Giustinian Lolin is located on the banks of Canal Grande in Venice, Italy. Its facade was renovated during the Baroque period by Baldassare Longhena in 1630.

Longhena maintained traces of the original gothic plan, with narrow peaked windows. His tiered facade combines Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian columns, deftly on top of one another.

In the 19th century the palace was occupied by various residents: the doctor Francesco Aglietti followed by the dancer Maria Taglioni, and then by the former Duchess of Parma, Maria Luisa.

In the 20th century, it was the home of the Ugo and Olga Levi Foundation for Music Studies, founded in 1962. The Levi family was a Jewish wealthy mercantile and banking pioneer in Venice, who survived persecution during World War II by hiding as farmers in the countryside.
Claudia Rose De Cotiis, President of VINCENZO DE COTIIS FOUNDATION, says “At the foundation, we are surrounded by history, but also enclosed in a space dedicated to contemporary art and futuristic expression. Myself and Vincenzo have felt a deep love for Venice all our lives, and it was important to respond to its call, creating a space that is an authentic extension of ourselves and of everything that makes this city unique. VINCENZO DE COTIIS FOUNDATION is as much a centre for contemporary expression as it is a heartfelt thanks from us to Venice, in acknowledgement of all it has given us over the years.”
